Many potential volunteers don’t understand the global power relations that stand behind such a motivation: European colonialism for centuries has exploited people\, land and resources in Africa\, Asia\, the Americas and Oceania and the consequences of this are more than visible until today. Also today\, European governments and companies are contributing to and driving global injustices. \nVolunteering organisations need to be antiracist. European volunteering organisations that send volunteers to the Global South need extensive knowledge on the historical\, political and economic context that takes place in order to be able to make decisions whether they should send a volunteer to the Global South. If they do send someone\, they need good educational methods to talk about critical whiteness\, racism\, global injustices and the power structures these are embedded in. They need knowledge on how (not) to promote volunteering in the Global South\, p.e. on social media. \nSessions in this training will revolve around the following questions: \n\nWhat is the white savior complex? How is it related to colonial history?\nWhich motivations do European volunteers have for volunteering in the Global South? How can we deal with these?\nHow to prepare European volunteers for volunteering in the Global South?\nHow to change neocolonial structures in your organisation? How to show solidarity with the Global South?\n\nOutcome: With this training\, we expect you to be able to start institutional changes in order to make your organisation more ethical\, antiracist and anticolonial. We also expect you to do follow-up workshops with the contents you learn in this training in your sending organisation\, e.g. by taking over the preparation of volunteers or by doing a workshop on white savior complex. \nThis is part of a bigger project: This training is part of the project “European Youth for Global Solidarity”\, funded by the European Commission through Erasmus+. SCI Austria\, as part of this project\, also organised the training “Beyond Neocolonialism” in Vienna in July 2022. As an outcome of the two activities\, we will create an adapted version of the toolkit “The Power Behind Good Intentions”\, which SCI Austria has been creating with a series of postcolonial seminars in the past few years. \nParticipant’s profile \nThe project aims to gather 30 participants. Our main target group are people who are actively involved in sending\, preparing or promoting voluntary services of Europeans going to the Global South. All participants selected for this project should meet the following criteria: \n\nBe 18 years old or older\nLive in one of the countries of our partner organisations: Albania\, Austria\, Czech Republic\, Belgium\, France\, Germany\, Ireland\, Italy\, Jordan\, North Macedonia\, Portugal\, Slovenia\, Tunisia\, Ukraine\nBe able to work in English\nBe interested in the topics of the training and have a strong motivation to act as a multiplier\nAble to attend for the full duration of the training\nIf somehow possible and feasible\, be committed to come to the training without flying\, and to\ntravel instead by overland route.\n\nWe explicitly encourage participants of all classes\, educational backgrounds\, genders\, sexual orientations\, abilities and ethnic backgrounds to apply. \nLogistics\, financial conditions and sustainability \nSimple life: The training will take place in a seminar house with simple living conditions. You will sleep in a room shared with few other people.\nMoney\, money\, money: We can cover all essential costs of the program (including food\, travel costs up to a maximum amount per country\, visa costs\, accommodation and seminar) through a European project grant by Erasmus+. They are used in volunteer camps to bring the group together\,\nand to work on contents during seminars and trainings. There is hardly any volunteering group that does not play\ngames during their projects. \nBut why are we actually using these playful methods?\nWhat should we consider when playing?\nAnd what are good examples for games & playful methods? \nGames in educational work got institutionalised without considerably reflecting neither their use\, their advantages\,\nnor their challenges. On the one hand\, games can be very helpful and useful in the seminar context. On the other hand\, they can be criticised regarding the reproduction of stereotypes or as violating the personal space of participants. To debate the role of playful activities and games in volunteering activities\, SCI Germany together with VCV \nSerbia organise this project aimed at trainers\, youth workers\, group coordinators and volunteers. During the 1st Activity\, the Play for Peace Training in April 2022\, participants from different peace and volunteering organisations gathered in Sonthofen/Germany to learn about the use of playful activities and games in Non-Formal Education and their huge connection to discrimination. They discussed societal power structures and how these structures\, as well as stereotypes and discrimination\, can be present during playful activities and games. Participants are currently implementing the outcomes of the training in their local activities and try to use playful methods and games that are more inclusive and peaceful. \nNow we are looking for applications and participants for the 2nd Activity of the project\, the Play for Peace Seminar in Mali Iđoš near Novi Sad/Serbia. During the seminar\, we will have a more detailed look at playful methods and games. We will try out energizers\, simulation games and board games that are useful for educational purposes. We will critically reflect on the pros and cons of these games. \nWe intend to develop a Manual on inclusive and peaceful games and energizers for youth workers during the seminar. Therefore\, a big part of the seminar will be to collect\, to discuss and to gather more information for the Manual. \nThis seminar also gives space to connect to other international organisations and to get information about their ways\nof using playful methods that are sensitive towards discrimination. We will have a big open space in which everyone\ncan share methods and games with the rest of the group. \nAfter the seminar\, there will be a Follow-Up Period. Two\, three and four months after the seminar\, we will hold joint video conferences with the trainers and all participants. The conferences aim to finalise the Manual\, to share updates on new projects that evolved during the project\, to strengthen the network and partnerships\, and to provide support to the participants\, for further project implementation. \nThis call for applications comprises the last two parts of the Play for Peace project:\nThe Seminar from 16th to 22 nd October 2022\, and the Follow-Up Period until early 2023. \nYou can join the project even if you have not participated in the previous activities. All activities will be held in English language. \nThe Venue \nThe seminar will take place at Katai Farm in Mali Iđoš\, Serbia. \nThe Team \nAn experienced team of trainers and facilitators of SCI and VCV will facilitate the seminar. \nLiving in a Group \nWe will spend one week together in a group of 30 people. 30 people with different backgrounds and experiences.\nFor us it is very important to take time to create a safer space to live and work together. For this we will set up a\ngroup agreement all together at the beginning. Please be aware that Inclusion\, anti-discrimination and reduction of\nstereotypes is nothing very easy and might be challenging for people. European governments and companies have been enabling and driving unacceptable working conditions\, land theft\, genocides and civil wars\, lack of access to vaccines and medication\, the disappearance of cultures and languages\, etc. in the Global South. It is more than urgent for Europeans to step up in two ways: \n1) to raise awareness for European involvement in global injustices and how this is related to colonial history; \n2) to hold decision-makers in Europe accountable for these injustices \nCreating campaigns with young people against neocolonialism. In this training you learn how to create social media or activist campaigns around neocolonialism. You will identify a struggle or hot topic you want to work on and you will work on it during the training in an international group. The campaigns we finish will be published online on the channels of Service Civil International (SCI) and its partner organisations. Participants will learn basics in campaign strategy\, how to launch successful social media campaigns\, how to put pressure on decision-makers and how to deal with backlash. \nTwo parts of the training: Online meetup with the group and with activists from the Global South as an intro to the training. From 17-23 July we meet in Vienna to create campaigns together. “Beyond Neocolonialism – Solidarity and activist training for youth workers“ is part of the project “European Youth for Global Solidarity”\, funded by the European Commission through Erasmus+. Or who make sexist jokes and generally take up more space than FLINTA persons (=Females\, Lesbians\, Inter-\, Non-Binary\, Trans- and A-Gender Persons)? This sounds familiar and you are annoyed by behaviours like this? At youth projects\, participants and facilitators are repeatedly confronted with challenging situations caused by male socialization similar those mentioned above or even worse. These behaviors make a seminar less comfortable for everybody and need to be addressed and reduced by the facilitators. Especially when we discuss topics like Peace\, Justice or Discrimination a safe environment is crucial. \n“Toxic masculinity” is the term coined for a harmful set of behaviors that some men still continue to uphold. There is nothing toxic about being a man\, but some men act in destructive ways based on the gender roles they learned during their socialisation and think that they need to fulfil those: violence\, intimidating aggressions\, hyper-competitiveness\, sexual objectification\, and emotional detachment. Misogyny\, homophobia\, and transphobia are often reinforced through these behaviors. Women\, non- binary people\, and also other men are the targets of these behaviors. And “toxic” men even direct these behaviors towards themselves because they feel that they do not meet what is required of “a real man”. \nWe have observed these behaviors on larger and smaller scales in our volunteering and youth projects. With “Detox your project”\, we want to address the problem and enable facilitators to deal with toxic masculinity in their projects. With varying interactive methods\, we will reflect on our own gendered socialization\, discuss the topic and our experiences within the group and deepen our knowledge about toxic masculinity\, sexism\, gender and patriarchy. Based on this\, we will develop strategies to deal with toxic masculinity in our projects and share these through a toolkit that we’ll write together at the seminar. We will also discuss ways how to encourage and shape alternative masculinities during projects. \nDuring the seminar we are going to use a broad variety of non-formal education methods\, such as world café\, snowball discussions\, research\, silent exhibition\, theatre\, visual harvesting\, arts\, energizers\, self reflection\, teambuilding games and more. \nThe team\nThe seminar will be facilitated by an experience team of trainers of SCI: Sima* Jakob & Mira Weinberger. They are active trainers in the field of anti-discrimination\, gender and climate justice. They are used in volunteer camps to bring the group together\, and to work on contents during seminars and trainings. There is hardly any volunteering group that does not play games during their projects. But why are we actually using these games? And what should we consider when playing? \nGames in educational work got institutionalised without considerably reflecting their use\, their advantages\, and their\nchallenges. On the one hand\, games can be very helpful and useful in the seminar context. On the other hand\, they\ncan be criticised regarding the reproduction of stereotypes or as violating the personal space of participants. To debate the role of games in volunteering activities\, SCI Germany organises this project aimed at trainers\, youth\nworkers\, group coordinators and volunteers. The project consists of 5 parts: 2 on-site activities and decentralised\npreparation\, implementation and follow-up activities. \nThis call for applications comprises the first three parts: \nThe Training from 16th to 23rd April with its online preparation period and the implementation and reflection period during summer 2022. However\, we recommend a participation in all 5 parts of the project \n\nOnline-Preparation Phase (starting mid march\, 1 month before the training)\nProject participants will receive the most important information for the project activities beforehand. This includes\ntasks for the individual preparation as well as questions and tasks to reflect upon.\nTraining (16th to 23rd April 2022)\nDuring the training in Germany\, the participants learn about the basics of the usage of games in educational work. The training will provide a basis for deeper discussion and reflection on problems and advantages of games with a critical perspective on power relations. Obviously\, in this training we will play a lot in order to add practical experience to the theoretical approach. Participants will reflect upon their experiences with the games during their interim activities and discuss them further to develop a manual. Among all the challenges\, this also offers an opportunity to reflect on lessons learned regarding mobility in international peace work during the pandemic. \nThe Project MOVE makes mobility a peace issue and considers the acute need to raise awareness and to promote\ncritical reflection of current mobility choices in international volunteer projects and peace activities. Its main objectives are: \n\nto enhance the knowledge\, skills and competences of youth workers on the main topics\,\nto equip them with tools to make their activities ecologically and socially more sustainable\, and\nto create ideas and follow-up plans for innovative climate-friendly projects.\n\nThe project consists of four parts. This call for applications comprises the last two parts (Activity 2 and follow up)\, the “Landing and Spreading” Seminar near Innsbruck 06.-13. And the world is in a health crisis that poses enormous economic\, political and social challenges to which the international youth and volunteer movement must actively respond. \nYoung people with fewer opportunities are particularly affected by this crisis: young people with chronic illnesses who are directly affected by the health risk\, many young people losing their jobs or unable to find one\, with LGBT+ young people isolated at home with families who do not accept their identities\, young people with dysfunctional families locked at home. \nAt the same time\, reactions to the crisis\, especially within the EU\, have been very national and local\, with borders that have been open for decades closed and with international volunteering and youth exchanges being literally impossible in the ways we have done so far. As we believe in our goals and approaches\, we are working overtime to find new solutions\, such as international online volunteering\, local volunteer actions\, etc. \nWe need spaces to exchange these solutions\, to exchange ideas\, and to find new ways of doing it. for participants // International Training Course for youth workers „RutAlternativa“ DESCRIPTION:This international training course aims at enabling youth workers to train their peers\, colleagues and young people in their cities to become creators and organizers of educational walking tours which aim to explore the different realities of a place and to tell alternative stories about it. \nEducational walking tours are (mainly volunteers-based) organized guided walks through a city or a neighborhood\, with the purpose of presenting individuals and groups the experiences of those living in a certain place\, through their unique perspective: these walks take place in many cities around the world\, and they have different purposes\, such as bringing locals close to the cultures and traditions of migrants in their cities\, raising awareness on the life conditions of urban homeless persons\, and so on. \nAny topic can be involved in educational walking tours: climate change\, social movements\, youth cultures\, biodiversity\, urban gardens\, cultural diversity\, gentrification are just some of the areas that can be covered!\nTarget groups of these tours can be locals\, visitors\, persons belonging to a specific group\, ie. certain professionals who are interested in getting to know more about a certain issue\, or even members of local authorities and decision-makers. \nThe phases of the project are:\n● the international training course (6 working days) in Novi Sad\, Serbia\, where participants will learn about the methodology of educational walking tours;\n● a follow-up one-day training which participants to the international training will organize for their peers in their organizations/cities -so that they will learn the basics of this methodology and be able to create their own educational walking tours;\n● pilot walking tours in each city (preparation\, promotion\, implementation\, evaluation) organized by the international training course participants with the support of the partner organizations;\n● a final e-publication on educational walking tours\, created using inputs and tools from the TC as well as from the participants’ direct experiences and the routes they created in their cities. \nThe main aims of the project\, and specifically this training course\, are:\n● Support the involved organizations in creating educational walking tours that can introduce resident and visitors to relevant places and issues through first-hand contact and experience\, in order to increase their knowledge and understanding of a certain places’ history\, culture and current issues;\n● train participants in becoming multipliers (training others in their communities and organizations) of educational walking tours methodology;\n● create at least one itinerary of an educational walking route per partner organization. \nThe participants may be youth workers\, social workers\, youth mentors\, coaches of youth initiatives and other youth projects\, volunteer coordinators\, trainers\, facilitators\, activists.\nAll potential participants applying for this project should meet the following criteria: \n● be 18 years old or older\n● be able to work in English\n● be interested in the Training course topics and have a strong motivation to act as a multiplier\n● be able to attend for the full duration (October 4th-11th)\n● when feasible\, be committed to come to the seminar without flying\, and to travel instead by overland route (bus\, train..).\nWe explicitly encourage participants of all social Und obwohl die Klimabewegung seit 2019 stark gewachsen ist\, ist sie immer noch zu klein\, um wirklich etwas zu verändern. Eine große Anzahl von Menschen muss aktiver Teil der Bewegung werden\, was bedeutet\, dass sich die Klimabewegung öffnen muss. \nArme und Jugendliche aus der Arbeiterklasse sind in der Klimabewegung stark unterrepräsentiert. Die Klimabewegung in Europa wird überwiegend von Menschen geführt wird\, die meist aus der Mittelschicht kommen\, weiß sind und eine Hochschulausbildung haben. Dabei sind wirtschaftlich schwache Menschen und Menschen aus der Arbeiterklasse diejenigen\, die am meisten von den Auswirkungen der Klimakrise betroffen sind\, sowohl in der Gegenwart als auch in der Zukunft und sowohl global als auch national – z.B. sind es Arbeiter*innen\, die durch den Übergang zu erneuerbaren Energien ihre Arbeitsplätze verlieren. \nAber wie können wir die Bewegung für soziale und Klimagerechtigkeit stärker zusammenbringen? Was sind die Gründe dafür\, dass sich arme Menschen und Menschen aus der Arbeiterklasse in der Klimabewegung nicht wohlfühlen? Wie hängt das alles mit dem Kapitalismus zusammen? Und wie können wir diese Strukturen verändern\, um inklusiver zu werden? \nDer SCI und andere internationale Freiwilligendienstorganisationen stehen vor ähnlichen Herausforderungen wie die Klimabewegung: Die meisten Menschen\, die beim SCI internationale Freiwilligendienste leisten\, kommen aus dem akademischen und bürgerlichen Milieu\, während es immer das Ziel von SCI war\, Menschen unterschiedlicher Herkunft zusammenzubringen. Wie können wir das ändern? \nMehrere Organisationen und Aktivengruppen in ganz Europa\, sowohl in der Klima- als auch in der internationalen Freiwilligendienstbewegung\, haben damit begonnen\, ihre Strukturen zu verändern\, um in Bezug auf die Schichtzugehörigkeit inklusiver zu werden. Diese strukturellen Veränderungen und Werkzeuge müssen gemeinsam genutzt werden. \nDas Projekt\nVom 24.-30. September 2021 führen wir ein siebentägiges internationales Seminar zum Thema mit 25 Teilnehmenden aus elf EU-Ländern in Sonthofen/Bayern durch. \nDas Koordinierungsteam besteht aus Britta\, Mira\, Simon*\, Thomas und dem Team von SCI Deutschland. \nErwartete Ergebnisse\nEin Online-Handbuch für Organisationen\, die mit jungen Menschen zu Klimathemen arbeiten\, wird während des Seminars auf der Grundlage unserer Sitzungen und Erkenntnisse erstellt. Wir werden Methoden\, Best Practices und Richtlinien für Jugendarbeiter*innen und Aktivist*innen hinzufügen. \nWir laden auch dich dazu ein\, das Thema Klassismus in der Klimabewegung zu verbreiten\, indem du Workshops vor oder nach dem Seminar organisierst und Diskussionen zu diesem Thema in deinem lokalen Klimakontext beginnst. Wir werden dir Werkzeuge an die Hand geben\, wie du einen solchen Workshop organisieren kannst. \nCOVID19\nZum jetzigen Zeitpunkt gehen wir davon aus\, dass es möglich sein wird\, das Seminar im September persönlich in Deutschland zu organisieren. Wir werden alle Teilnehmenden bitten\, entweder geimpft oder genesen zu sein oder einen COVID19-Test zu machen. Wir werden ein Hygienekonzept für die Gruppe während des Seminars haben und alle Vorschriften der deutschen Behörden befolgen. Sollte es zu einer weiteren Sperrung kommen\, werden wir überlegen\, das Seminar zum selben Termin online durchzuführen. \nWer kann am Seminar teilnehmen?\nMitarbeiter*innen der Jugendarbeit\, Aktivist*innen und Freiwillige aus Freiwilligenorganisationen\, aus der Klimabewegung und aus Gewerkschaften. Alle Teilnehmenden\, die für dieses Projekt ausgewählt werden\, sollten die folgenden Kriterien erfüllen: \n\n18 Jahre alt oder älter sein\nsie sollten in der Lage sein\, auf Englisch zu arbeiten\nsich für die Seminarthemen (Klimagerechtigkeit und Klassismus) interessieren und eine starke Motivation haben\, als Multiplikator*innen zu wirken\nin der Lage sein\, über die gesamte Dauer des Seminars teilzunehmen\nIdealerweise sind sie aktiv in der Jugendarbeit und in der Lage\, Entscheidungen ihrer Entsendeorganisationen zu beeinflussen und haben Erfahrung im Bereich Freiwilligenarbeit\, Frieden und/oder Klimagerechtigkeit\nWenn irgendwie möglich und machbar\, sollten sie sich verpflichten\, ohne Flugreise zum Seminar zu kommen und stattdessen auf dem Landweg anzureisen.\n\nWir ermutigen ausdrücklich Teilnehmende aller Schichten\, Bildungshintergründe\, Geschlechter\, sexuellen Orientierungen\, Fähigkeiten und ethnischen Hintergründe\, sich zu bewerben. \nLogistik\, finanzielle Bedingungen und Nachhaltigkeit\nEinfaches Leben: Das Seminar findet in einem Seminarhaus mit einfachen Lebensverhältnissen statt. Die Teilnehmenden werden in einem Zimmer schlafen\, das sie sich mit wenigen anderen Personen teilen. \nMoney\, Money\, Money: Wir können alle wesentlichen Kosten des Programms (u.a. Verpflegung\, Reisekosten bis zu einem Höchstbetrag pro Land\, Visakosten\, Unterkunft und Seminar) durch einen europäischen Projektzuschuss von Erasmus+ abdecken. Die Entsendeorganisation kann eine kleine Teilnahmegebühr verlangen. \nNachhaltiges Essen: Das Essen\, das wir zur Verfügung stellen\, wird vegan sein. Dies ist nicht nur eine praktische Entscheidung\, sondern auch eine ideologische: Der SCI glaubt an die Werte der Nachhaltigkeit und Klimagerechtigkeit – und wenn wir zu einem friedlicheren Planeten beitragen wollen\, müssen wir auf die industrialisierte Tierhaltung und ihre zerstörerischen Auswirkungen auf unseren Planeten verzichten. \nNachhaltiges Reisen?: Das ist auch der Grund\, warum wir darum bitten\, zu diesem Seminar mit nachhaltigeren Transportmitteln anzureisen\, anstatt zu fliegen (z.B. mit der Bahn oder dem Bus)\, wenn es irgendwie möglich ist. This issue is very common in young people\, raised in environments filled with thoughts like masculinity is for boys and emotions are for girls. \nThe youth needs to raise their gender literacy to achieve better self-understanding and confidence. Now in the era of technology\, young people spend more time online\, where many issues are projected in the web showing the need of raising the media literacy in young people. The world of media and social networks is becoming more and more visual\, so the need to distinguish between the good and bad examples of media provocations is pretty urgent too. \nBy this project we are willing to promote gender diversity and by transferring understanding on common fundamental values of our society to reach young people and to contribute to the prevention of violent radicalization based on gender. \nThe program of the training activity is organized in building up thematic modules to provide new information\, enhance knowledge and develop the skills of participants\, and enable participants to share in a safe and creative environment. The program also includes meetings with experts on visual arts as well as visiting several associations who will share their own practises and who are experts in the field of gender equality and will further contribute to the learning and development process. \nThe program of the training is organized in several modules like “raising gender literacy”\, “raising visual arts skills” or “visual stories become real” where the participants will be provided with new information to enhance their knowledge and develop their skills. We will work on creating a safe space where everyone feels comfortable sharing personal experiences and situations as well as feel free to unleash their creativity. The program also foresees the visit of professionals of visual arts to the centre where the training will take place in addition to meet workers from different associations in Sofia working on practices related to gender equality. \nWe will integrate in the working methods of this training those of experiencial learning and non-formal and informal learning to facilitate the acquisition of knowledge and skills in a series of activities meant to be enriching and entertaining where participants will feel prone to contribute\, share ideas\, discuss\, and have fun altogether. We have devised this training for participants regardless of their level of expertise on the Gender topic to generate an space of exchange among participants that will lead to peer-to-peer learning. Our main objective is to get them involved to continue spreading the word in their local communities about gender equality. \n\nInteractive presentations\, working in small groups\, debates\, ice-breaking games\, energizers\, sharing experiences\, group and self reflections\, and other methods will be used to encourage the inclusion of all participants in the activities. \nThe participants we aim to reach with the project are young people\, activists and youth workers who want to learn more about visual arts\, how to use creative techniques on raising awareness on gender related topics and how to adapt them for an everyday work within their local realities.
