SUMMARY:ESC Camp „Youth for Nature“ – Volunteer Camp in the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Wienerwald
DESCRIPTION:Call for volunteers\n08.03.2024 – 22.03.2024\nIntroduction: \nAbout 12 volunteers will participate in this great attempt to maintain the typical natural environment/biodiversity of the Biosphere Reserve Wienerwald. We also want to show politicians and local communities that there are young  people who do not shun hard work\, who care for nature and  who are willing to sacrifice their spare time to help conserve areas worthy of protection. \nType of Work: \nDry grasslands form a rare and endangered habitat in the Biosphere Reserve Wienerwald. We will cut grass\, bushes and trees\, and remove the biomass from the areas to suppress the beginning of forest growth. Our goal is to conserve and enhance biodiversity in unique and rare habitats. \nWe will also have time to get to know each other and learn about ecological protection. \nStudy Theme:  \nYou will gather knowledge of the region on the Biosphere Reserve Wienerwald and its flora and fauna. Furthermore\, you will gain hands-on experience in managing invasive plant species. \nAccommodation: \nYou will be staying at the scout centre  NÖ Pfadfinder und Pfadfinderinnen Landesverband\, near Vienna\, Austria. The facility is equipped with dormitories\, bath rooms and a common kitchen. Volunteers are accommodated in the dormitories. Regular public transport is available. \nLocation: \nThe Wienerwald was designated as a Biosphere Reserve in 2005 by UNESCO. This standing protects the great variety of natural and cultural elements that make this region so unique and valuable. The Wienerwald BR covers an area of 105\,645 hectares and extends across 51 communities in Lower Austria and seven municipal districts in Vienna. Some 815\,000 people live in this region. \nRequirements: \nWe will work every day for 5-6 hours with the breaks in between. We will have some free days in between and also free afternoons. The work will be physical and in steep terrain. Therefore\, some basic fitness as well as solid ankle-high hiking boots are required. DESCRIPTION:ESC Volunteering Team project in Rome\nAre you interested in the topics of food culture\, festival planning and social exchange?\n“Festival Internazionale della Zuppa di Roma 2023” is a Volunteering workcamp taking place in Rome from the 22th of March until the 6th of April 2023. \nVolunteering workcamp in Rome\, 2019 \nLa Città dell’Utopia\n“La Città dell’Utopia” (Utopia City) is a project of SCI Italy located in Rome (San Paolo neighborhood) inside the Casale Garibaldi\, an old country house located on a green hill in the middle of modern buildings. The project is an ongoing workshop on active citizenship and local development. There are different events\, initiatives\, courses and workshops organized around different main themes: interculturality\, sustainable lifestyles\, antifascism and active\ncitizenship. At La Città dell’Utopia we care a lot about our food consumption habits focusing on reuse and preservation to avoid waste. \nCall for participants:\nZuppa Festival\nThe International Soup Festival was born in Lille in 2001 and successfully spread across Europe to Berlin\, Krakow\, Barcelona\, Madrid\, Frankfurt and the Italian city of Bologna in 2004 and Rome in 2008. \nThe 16th edition of Zuppa Festival will be held at La Città dell’Utopia with the support of a large number of citizens and volunteers and aims at creating a moment of celebration around a unique\, rich and popular dish that is known all over the world. Participants will be competing for the famous prize “Mestolo d’Oro” (golden ladle). \nThe International Soup Festival has several aims:\n● Cultural\, social and human integration: meeting and sharing food together\, on the streets of Rome.\n● The artistic dimension: creating and mixing flavors\, in order to present them to the public.\n● The playful dimension\, involving cultural traditions exchange.\n● Everything is free\, all participants compete while offering their food to everyone.\n● An open manifesto\, encouraging everyone to participate. \nThis year\, the main themes of the festival are the celebration of food waste in a way that it can be reused to encourage the conservation of resources\, and the appreciation of making mistakes as a creative moment of growth. \n\nZuppa Festival – The Workcamp\nThe Camp will be divided in two parts: a study part and a more practical one related to the organization of the Zuppa Festival. \nActivities\nDuring the workcamp\, the volunteers will have a workload of around 6-7 hours per day. The main activities will be: \n● Supporting the organization of the indoor and outdoor spaces of the festival;\n● Supporting the preparation and running of the event “Zuppa Festival 2023” (Presence at the bar\, cash desks\, cooking…);\n● Supporting the promotion of the festival;\n● Tidying up the venue at the end of the “Zuppa Festival 2023”;\n● A possibility to create creative outputs from the festival: videos\, pictures\, interviews\, podcasts\, etc…\n● Contributing to some practical activities related to La Città dell’Utopia (gardening\, cleaning\, etc…) \nStudy Part\nThe study part will be focused on sustainable food consumption and local food production where the participants will be able to learn more about organic and zero kilometer food\, zero waste food and fair trade products with an ecological perspective. \nAt La Città dell’Utopia\, the volunteers will also have the chance to learn more about food habits and patterns\, with a main focus on Italian food culture\, vegetarian and vegan recipes and different cooking techniques. \nDuring the study part\, the goal will be to give support to the writing of a recipe book of La Citta dell’Utopia\, through: \n● Research activities and writing articles on food and different recipes that are usually cooked here;\n● Activities of editing the book\, that is\, making graphics and/or layout.\n● Proofreading the materials and recipes. \nRequirements\n● Interest in food culture\n● Group working skills\n● Interest in organizing and creating events\n● Artistic and manual skills\n● Motivation for cooking and gardening\n● Basic cooking skills\n● Being under 30 years old. \nLogistics\, financial conditions\, and sustainability\nSimple life: You will be hosted in the hostel of “La Città dell’ Utopia”. You will share a room with other volunteers. You will also share the two bathrooms of the hostel. We provide sheets and blankets\, but don’t forget to bring your own towels! \nMoney\, money\, money: This project is founded by the European Solidarity Corps program. Therefore\, we can cover all essential costs of the program (including food\, travel costs up to a maximum amount per country\, visa costs\, accommodation\, and pocket money). The travel is reimbursed after tickets and boarding passes submission. \nSustainable food: The food we will cook will be vegan/vegetarian. This is not just a practical decision\, but also an ideological one: SCI believes in the values of sustainability and climate justice – and if we want to contribute to a more peaceful planet\, we need to give up on industrialized animal agriculture and its destructive effects on our planet. You can tell us if you have any diets\, allergies\, or intolerances that we should be aware of. \nSustainable travels?: This is also why we ask you to come to this youth exchange by any more sustainable means of transport rather than flying (e.g. by train or bus)\, if somehow possible. We will guide you on how you can reach the venue once you are accepted to the project. \nHow to apply?\nYou can send your CV and Motivation Letter until the 28th of February 2023 to incoming@sci-italia.it We invite you to apply as soon as possible (all applications will be treated on arrival order). \nFor more information please contact: incoming@sci-italia.it

SUMMARY:Workcamp: Green Belt Camp
DESCRIPTION:About the Green Belt Workcamp\n \n\nThe European Green Belt is a valuable ecological network along the former Iron curtain which divided Europe into east and west for nearly 40 years. The European Green Belt forms the backbone of Pan-European ecological network and provides a significant contribution to European “Green Infrastructure”. The Greenbelt-Initiative is an example of cross border cooperation and nature conservation. European Green Belt is a space for encounters between people and cultures and opportunities for a joint sustainable approach to natural and cultural heritage.\n\n \n\nWith this project in the Green Belt at the Austrian-Czech border\, the Austrian League for Nature Conservation – Lower Austria and SCI Austria want to link international cooperation and nature conservation. Through the involvement of the communities in the border area and the close cooperation between the local people and international volunteers in the context of the Greenbelt Camp\, we hope to bring peace\, cooperation and unification ideas of the European Green Belt to life.\n\n \n\nIn order to preserve the diverse natural and cultural landscape along the European Green Belt\, nature conservation-oriented management – in particular of open land biotope types such as (semi) dry grassland and rock dry grassland – is essential. This usually takes the form of manual maintenance of the valuable and species-rich biotopes and can hardly be managed today without the help of volunteers. Young people are invited to work together to help maintain valuable biotopes on the Green Belt and are given the opportunity to learn about the history of this landscape.\n\n \n\nWhat will you do? In this Workcamp\, you will take concrete action to maintain biodiversity in a part of the European Green Belt zone along the border between Austria and Czech Republic and contribute to preservation of endangered species in this area. Almost every day\, we will work together for 5-6 hours. We will mow steep meadows and remove bushes from dry rocky grasslands that are threatened to be overgrown by bushes and trees. But don’t worry\, we will have enough free days in between to rest and get to know each other and the region.\n\n \n\nStudy part! Apart from contributing to protection of endangered species by physical work you will also learn about them as well as about other plants and animals in the area. We will reflect upon ecological problems and initiatives that one can take in order to support environmental protection and promote a sustainable green Europe.\n\n \n\nLeisure time! The beautiful region of Lower Austria offers a lot of possibilities for free-time activities. You can learn something about wine-production\, we will visit the castle of Falkenstein\, make a trip to Mikulov. There is also a little pond near our accommodation\, where you can swim during your free time. Anyway\, the free-time activities depend on you!\n\n \nWho can participate?\n \n\n Between 18 and 30 years old\n Motivated to take concrete action to improve the natural environment and resist global challenges\n Able to participate in the complete project\n Be aware that the work is physically demanding!\n\n \nWe explicitly encourage participants of all genders\, sexual orientations\, abilities\, races and ethnic backgrounds to apply. \n \n\nThis Project is founded by European Solidarity Corps. Therefore all travel costs will be reimbursed after the workcamp. Food and accommodation are included and pocket money will also be provided to participants during the camp.\n\n \n\nAll participants will receive Youthpass upon successful completion of the workcamp.\n\n \nHow can I apply?\n \n\nFill out this application form https://forms.gle/L7vapJRjjJwaVwfWAWe will get back to you with the selection results as soon as possible!

SUMMARY:Workcamp: Nature across borders
DESCRIPTION:About the Workcamp\n \n\nThe local partners\, National Parks Thayatal and Podyjí oversee the protection and ecological development of their respective regions\, with their particular biodiversity. Some areas in Thayatal and Podyjí need ongoing management to form sustainable habitats for rare species. Meadows and diverse dry grassland areas\, need to be taken care of to preserve them and their ecosystem functions. The management of national parks lays great emphasis on environmental education and visitor management.\n\n \n\nWhat will you do? We will remove invasive plants to prevent irreversible anthropogenic effects on the ecosystem. Secondly\, we will mow or rake dry grassland areas and selectively remove bushes and small trees to\nprevent the forest from overgrowing these species-rich open habitats. We will also have time to get to know each other and enjoy the early autumn in Austria and the Czech Republic.\n\n \n\nStudy Theme! You will gather knowledge of local habitats with their flora and fauna as well as their mandatory management\, including the challenges faced. Furthermore\, you will gain hands-on experience in maintaining dry grasslands and managing invasive species.\n\n \n\nAccommodation! At Thayatal National Park you will be staying in the Wildcat Camp. The facility is equipped with bedrooms for up to 6 persons with bathrooms\, a common room and kitchen. During time in Podyjí National Park\, you will stay in Havraníky in an old school. The building belongs to the National Park and is equipped with two dormitories up to 12 persons\, a bathroom\, a common room and a kitchen.\n\n \nAbout the Parks\n \n\nThe conservation area of Thayatal and Podyjí National Park covers part of the Thaya Valley river landscape. While cutting through the Bohemian Massif the river Thaya created an enormously diverse landscape along the river. Mainly the area consists of diverse forest but there are also meadows\, dry grasslands and\, as the name suggests\, aquatic habitats like the river Thaya or Fugnitz and some other trickels.\n\n \nWho can participate?\n \n\n You are 18 years old or older\n Be motivated to take concrete action to improve the natural environment and resist global challenges\n Be able to participate in the complete project\n Be aware that the work is physically demanding!\n English is the official language of the camp so please make sure you can speak it well enough for basic communications and to understand work and safety instructions.\n Before you sign up for this camp\, PLEASE make sure that you are healthy enough to participate\n\n \n\nWe will work 4-5 days a week for six hours a day with breaks in between. The work will be physical and in steep terrain. Therefore\, some basic fitness as well as solid ankle-high hiking boots are required. Be prepared for hot and / or rainy weather\, penetrating the bushes or water wading\n\n \nHow to apply\n \n\nYou can apply through the Workcamp Database! Under this Link you can find the Application Explanation\n\n \n\nWe are looking forward to your applications!

SUMMARY:Online Workcamp: "Let’s make sound in the silence” – Ravensbrück goes DigitalOnline Workcamp: "Let’s make sound in the silence” – Ravensbrück goes Digital
DESCRIPTION:From 2nd to 5th November 2021 SCI Germany is organising the 3rd virtual workcamp in which you can learn about the history of the women’s concentration camp Ravensbrück\, analyze/discuss Video-Interviews with Ravensbrück-survivors and create individual art to honour these survivors and their stories. As volunteers we will pre-process interviews of the Memorials media collection to make them accessible\n\nDescription: The former women concentration camp of Ravensbrueck was established in 1939 near the small city of Fuerstenberg/Havel. Until the liberation in April 1945\, more than 120.000 women and children\, 20.000 men\, and 1.000 young minor women of the so called “Uckermark Youth Protective Custody Camp” were incarcerated there. The prisoners came from more than 30 nations. They had to do forced labor in different sectors\, e.g. for SS-factories or the company of Siemens. Their daily life was characterized by hunger\, mistreatments\, and bad hygienic conditions. Tens of thousands of prisoners were killed. Today\, Ravensbrueck Memorial Museum keeps traces and records\, enhances remembrance and research\, and creates a place of active learning and get-togethers. \nType of Work: You will learn together about the history of the women’s concentration camp Ravensbrück\, analyze/discuss Video-Interviews with Ravensbrück-survivors and create individual art to honour these survivors and their stories. As volunteers you will pre-process interviews of the Memorials media collection to make them accessible. Share your thoughts\, feelings\, your politics and your activism. You are all so far away and yet so close! Please inform us which language skills you have! \nStudy Theme: Prisoners and female SS-guards\, commemoration and remembrance at Ravensbrueck Memorial. \nAccommodation: Your own home 🙂 \nLanguage: English \nNotes: Every year international workcamps are organized in cooperation with the Memorial site. Because of the worldwide situation\, the 2020-Ravensbrück-Workcamp will be digital. \nWant to register? Find out more and contact us: bettwieser@ravensbrueck.de

SUMMARY:Workcamp: Open House (Thuringia)
DESCRIPTION:Description: This year Open Houses is supporting the revival of the anniversary campaign “100 years of workcamps” of 2020\, which due to the COVID-19 emergency had to be postponed towards 2021. For this reason\, Castle Lohra will be hosting a workcamp which will be representative of the volunteering work camp culture in Germany. In parallel to this workcamp\, Lohra Castle will also be hosting a seminar with the presence of former camp leaders and participants representing other German youth organisations\, where they will discuss the future of workcamps from the perspective of today’s young volunteers. The participants of this workcamp will be providing support for this seminar while partaking in the activities organised jointly with the seminar participants. \nType of Work: Support of preparation and organisation of a celebration event: 101 years of international workcamps: Peace and solidarity for the future. The volunteers will take care of the surrounding area and will carry out small renovation works. To make the work in the Building Weeks as productive as possible\, it would be welcome if the volunteers would already have some technical skills or experience in working on a construction site. Although such previous experience would be and advantage thus enabling the volunteers to share their skills and experiences it is not a mandatory condition for the participation at Building Weeks. \nStudy Theme: Open Houses – not empty buildings\, but places with visible and invisible traces of history\, places which have grown and decayed over the centuries\, places which were shaped by those people who lived there long ago as well those who left only yesterday – places which will be shaped by those who live there or who come as a guest. Open Houses – rooms which want to be filled with dreams and ideas\, with meetings and exchange\, by people of different backgrounds\, different cultures\, generations\, ideas\, and visions. Participants will get a chance to learn more about the volunteering movement. \nAccommodation: Shared rooms in 3 guest houses\, warm shower (limited hot water)\, 1 camp kitchen (cold water)\, coal-burning stoves. \nLanguage: In general\, the language spoken in the camps is English. But in all camps\, there is also the possibility to practice German with other volunteers\, camp leaders and the local people. \nRequirements: Interest in history in future of international Workcamps and volunteer movement

SUMMARY:Workcamp: Fostering Biodiversity in a Community Garden (Lake Constance)
DESCRIPTION:Description: Help to protect the biodiversity in a community garden and learn to reconnect with nature. The Verbindungskultur e.V. is a place to develop learning experiences which foster a profound and authentic connection to nature\, where sustainable ways of life are explored and practiced\, and which promote peaceful and creative ways of being together – to create social change for the benefit of all beings. With this work camp\, the biodiversity in the community garden at the place of the association “Verbindungskultur e.V.” close to Lake Constance is now to be specifically promoted. To this end\, we would like to enrich the existing permaculture garden with additional habitats for rare and/or specially adapted animal and plant species. \nType of Work: With our work\, we will focus on species protection and the construction of so-called “nature modules”\, i.e. small microhabitats that can increase and stabilize the biodiversity of a site\, in this case of the “home” our association. These nature modules include for example: dry stone walls\, stone piles\, stone pyramids\, dead wood piles\, wood cellars\, sandariums\, small water puddles\, wildflowers\, and many more. These increasingly rare habitats attract endangered species that can find a habitat here again. Furthermore\, we want to improve the infrastructure of our seminar site\, e.g. by building stairs and paths\, possibly also handicapped access. The tasks will mainly be accomplished with physical labor\, but there will also be theoretical input on the nature garden idea. \nStudy Theme: SCI; biodiversity in nature gardens; Permaculture; Nature Connection; Culture of Belonging; Compassionate\, peaceful and empathic communication \nDepending on the participants’ interests\, other themes are also possible. \nIn addition to the practical work and the study parts\, the work camp will be designed in a way that supports the growth of intense social bonds within the international volunteer team and beyond\, promoting peace on a personal and collective level. \nAccommodation: In own tents (please bring your own tent\, your sleeping mat and sleeping bag)\, if needed indoor-facilities are possible. There is an outdoor kitchen\, compost toilets\, solar shower\, and a cozy heated yurt as a community space (built by previous SCI volunteers). \nWe will cook together as a group – in our kitchen tent and sometimes\, if you are interested\, on the campfire. We will prepare mainly plant-based delicacies from as much as possible regional-seasonal ingredients \, which will nourish body and soul after work 🙂 \nLanguage: The common language will be English.
