Intercultural learning is our specialty! \n\n\n \nBut we have the feeling that sometimes our understanding of culture is quite limited\, static and oldfashioned:  By “culture” and “cultural exchange” we often mean exchange of people from different nationalities – and we emphasize this by making jokes about national identities\, asking participants to bring food from “their country”\, talk about “their country”\, etc. We usually don’t reflect that participants might have diverse approaches to how they feel about “their country”. We often lack an understanding for cultural nuances that go beyond nation states (class\, race\, gender\, age\, urban/rural\, sexual orientation\, subcultures\, etc.). \n\n\n \nWith this seminar\, we want to provide a space for youth workers and staff from volunteering organisations around Europe to critically reflect about their own practices of culturalization in non-formal education programs\, energizers\, support and training structures and free time activities. We will guide the seminar using techniques and approaches from antidiscrimination\, antiracism and critical whiteness. \n\n\n \nSome of the questions and topics we would like to explore include: \n\n\n \n\n\nWhat do we personally and our organisations mean when we say „culture“? What effect does this understanding of culture have on our participants? \n\n\nWhat is the role of national cultures in international youth projects – and how does this relate to nationalism\, nationbuilding\, pan-Europeanism and internationalism? \n\n\nHow can we deconstruct and play with the definition of „culture“ that our participants bring with them to our youth projects? \n\n\nWhat non-formal education methods can we share or create that have critical or constructive approaches to culture? What can be progressive alternatives to an „international evening“ and to talking about “cultural shocks” solely from a national perspective? \n\n\nHow does the setup of Erasmus+ programs reinforce certain notions of culture in our projects? \n\n\nHow can we challenge existing cultures within our projects and our societies (e.g. patriarchy\, heteronormativity\, white supremacy\, militarism) in order to create a culture of peace? \n\n\n\n\n \nA manual will be the outcome \n\n\n \nThe results of the seminar will be critical guidelines for youth and volunteering organisations as well as a collection of methods that stimulate critical or altenative views on „culture“. These results will be collected in a manual co-created by the participants. \n\n\n \nCOVID-19 \n\n\n \n This seminar was supposed to take place physically in Austria\, but due to a COVID-19 lockdown in Austria we are moving it online. The seminar will consist of daily 3 hours video calls from 13:30-17:00 CET (with 30 min break inbetween). There will be individual assignments to do between the sessions\, which you can schedule individually. By encouraging youth workers to facilitate their organizations and local communities to understand the issues surrounding migration\, this project hopes to create a wave of collaborations between and among partner organizations as well as with other civil society players\, local authorities\, job market stakeholders and other supportive mechanisms in their local communities to the benefit of better inclusion/integration mechanisms across Europe. \n\n\n\nThe training consists of two parts. This call for applications comprises the first training course which will be implemented in Diyarbakir\, Turkey\, from 21 until 29 of November 2021! The second training course will take place in Vienna\, Austria\, from 1st until 8th of May 2022. In doing so\, we aim to create intercultural connections\, international solidarity and a culture of peace and non-violence. The COVID-19 pandemic is posing unprecedented challenges for the movement. Neither travel nor physical meetings were possible. And the world is in a health crisis that poses enormous economic\, political and social challenges to which the international youth and volunteer movement must actively respond. \nYoung people with fewer opportunities are particularly affected by this crisis: young people with chronic illnesses who are directly affected by the health risk\, many young people losing their jobs or unable to find one\, with LGBT+ young people isolated at home with families who do not accept their identities\, young people with dysfunctional families locked at home. \nAt the same time\, reactions to the crisis\, especially within the EU\, have been very national and local\, with borders that have been open for decades closed and with international volunteering and youth exchanges being literally impossible in the ways we have done so far. As we believe in our goals and approaches\, we are working overtime to find new solutions\, such as international online volunteering\, local volunteer actions\, etc. \nWe need spaces to exchange these solutions\, to exchange ideas\, and to find new ways of doing it. We need spaces to exchange these solutions\, to increase their quantity and quality. Therefore\, SCI Madrid and SCI Germany have joined forces and are inviting you to join our seminar: COVID 19 – lessons learned. We will ask all participants to be vaccinated\, recovered and/or tested (depending on the rules in Spain at that point). We will have a hygiene concept for the group during the seminar and will follow all regulations by the authorities. Should there be another lockdown\, we will consider to do the seminar online on the same dates. \nParticipant’s profile\nThe project aims to gather 20 participants (up to 2 per partner organization). As volunteers we will pre-process interviews of the Memorials media collection to make them accessible\n\nDescription: The former women concentration camp of Ravensbrueck was established in 1939 near the small city of Fuerstenberg/Havel. Until the liberation in April 1945\, more than 120.000 women and children\, 20.000 men\, and 1.000 young minor women of the so called “Uckermark Youth Protective Custody Camp” were incarcerated there. The prisoners came from more than 30 nations. They had to do forced labor in different sectors\, e.g. for SS-factories or the company of Siemens. Their daily life was characterized by hunger\, mistreatments\, and bad hygienic conditions. Tens of thousands of prisoners were killed. youth workers „RutAlternativa“ DESCRIPTION:This international training course aims at enabling youth workers to train their peers\, colleagues and young people in their cities to become creators and organizers of educational walking tours which aim to explore the different realities of a place and to tell alternative stories about it. \nEducational walking tours are (mainly volunteers-based) organized guided walks through a city or a neighborhood\, with the purpose of presenting individuals and groups the experiences of those living in a certain place\, through their unique perspective: these walks take place in many cities around the world\, and they have different purposes\, such as bringing locals close to the cultures and traditions of migrants in their cities\, raising awareness on the life conditions of urban homeless persons\, and so on. \nAny topic can be involved in educational walking tours: climate change\, social movements\, youth cultures\, biodiversity\, urban gardens\, cultural diversity\, gentrification are just some of the areas that can be covered!\nTarget groups of these tours can be locals\, visitors\, persons belonging to a specific group\, ie. certain professionals who are interested in getting to know more about a certain issue\, or even members of local authorities and decision-makers. \nThe phases of the project are:\n● the international training course (6 working days) in Novi Sad\, Serbia\, where participants will learn about the methodology of educational walking tours;\n● a follow-up one-day training which participants to the international training will organize for their peers in their organizations/cities -so that they will learn the basics of this methodology and be able to create their own educational walking tours;\n● pilot walking tours in each city (preparation\, promotion\, implementation\, evaluation) organized by the international training course participants with the support of the partner organizations;\n● a final e-publication on educational walking tours\, created using inputs and tools from the TC as well as from the participants’ direct experiences and the routes they created in their cities. \nThe main aims of the project\, and specifically this training course\, are:\n● Support the involved organizations in creating educational walking tours that can introduce resident and visitors to relevant places and issues through first-hand contact and experience\, in order to increase their knowledge and understanding of a certain places’ history\, culture and current issues;\n● train Und obwohl die Klimabewegung seit 2019 stark gewachsen ist\, ist sie immer noch zu klein\, um wirklich etwas zu verändern. Eine große Anzahl von Menschen muss aktiver Teil der Bewegung werden\, was bedeutet\, dass sich die Klimabewegung öffnen muss. \nArme und Jugendliche aus der Arbeiterklasse sind in der Klimabewegung stark unterrepräsentiert. Die Klimabewegung in Europa wird überwiegend von Menschen geführt wird\, die meist aus der Mittelschicht kommen\, weiß sind und eine Hochschulausbildung haben. Dabei sind wirtschaftlich schwache Menschen und Menschen aus der Arbeiterklasse diejenigen\, die am meisten von den Auswirkungen der Klimakrise betroffen sind\, sowohl in der Gegenwart als auch in der Zukunft und sowohl global als auch national – z.B. sind es Arbeiter*innen\, die durch den Übergang zu erneuerbaren Energien ihre Arbeitsplätze verlieren. \nAber wie können wir die Bewegung für soziale und Klimagerechtigkeit stärker zusammenbringen? Was sind die Gründe dafür\, dass sich arme Menschen und Menschen aus der Arbeiterklasse in der Klimabewegung nicht wohlfühlen? Wie hängt das alles mit dem Kapitalismus zusammen? Und wie können wir diese Strukturen verändern\, um inklusiver zu werden? \nDer SCI und andere internationale Freiwilligendienstorganisationen stehen vor ähnlichen Herausforderungen wie die Klimabewegung: Die meisten Menschen\, die beim SCI internationale Freiwilligendienste leisten\, kommen aus dem akademischen und bürgerlichen Milieu\, während es immer das Ziel von SCI war\, Menschen unterschiedlicher Herkunft zusammenzubringen. Wie können wir das ändern? \nMehrere Organisationen und Aktivengruppen in ganz Europa\, sowohl in der Klima- als auch in der internationalen Freiwilligendienstbewegung\, haben damit begonnen\, ihre Strukturen zu verändern\, um in Bezug auf die Schichtzugehörigkeit inklusiver zu werden. Diese strukturellen Veränderungen und Werkzeuge müssen gemeinsam genutzt werden. \nDas Projekt\nVom 24.-30. September 2021 führen wir ein siebentägiges internationales Seminar zum Thema mit 25 Teilnehmenden aus elf EU-Ländern in Sonthofen/Bayern durch. \nDas Koordinierungsteam besteht aus Britta\, Mira\, Simon*\, Thomas und dem Team von SCI Deutschland. \nErwartete Ergebnisse\nEin Online-Handbuch für Organisationen\, die mit jungen Menschen zu Klimathemen arbeiten\, wird während des Seminars auf der Grundlage unserer Sitzungen und Erkenntnisse erstellt. Wir werden Methoden\, Best Practices und Richtlinien für Jugendarbeiter*innen und Aktivist*innen hinzufügen. \nWir laden auch dich dazu ein\, das Thema Klassismus in der Klimabewegung zu verbreiten\, indem du Workshops vor oder nach dem Seminar organisierst und Diskussionen zu diesem Thema in deinem lokalen Klimakontext beginnst. Wir werden dir Werkzeuge an die Hand geben\, wie du einen solchen Workshop organisieren kannst. \nCOVID19\nZum jetzigen Zeitpunkt gehen wir davon aus\, dass es möglich sein wird\, das Seminar im September persönlich in Deutschland zu organisieren. Wir werden alle Teilnehmenden bitten\, entweder geimpft oder genesen zu sein oder einen COVID19-Test zu machen. Wir werden ein Hygienekonzept für die Gruppe während des Seminars haben und alle Vorschriften der deutschen Behörden befolgen. Sollte es zu einer weiteren Sperrung kommen\, werden wir überlegen\, das Seminar zum selben Termin online durchzuführen. \nWer kann am Seminar teilnehmen?\nMitarbeiter*innen der Jugendarbeit\, Aktivist*innen und Freiwillige aus Freiwilligenorganisationen\, aus der Klimabewegung und aus Gewerkschaften. Alle Teilnehmenden\, die für dieses Projekt ausgewählt werden\, sollten die folgenden Kriterien erfüllen: \n\n18 Jahre alt oder älter sein\nsie sollten in der Lage sein\, auf Englisch zu arbeiten\nsich für die Seminarthemen (Klimagerechtigkeit und Klassismus) interessieren und eine starke Motivation haben\, als Multiplikator*innen zu wirken\nin der Lage sein\, über die gesamte Dauer des Seminars teilzunehmen\nIdealerweise sind sie aktiv in der Jugendarbeit und in der Lage\, Entscheidungen ihrer Entsendeorganisationen zu beeinflussen und haben Erfahrung im Bereich Freiwilligenarbeit\, Frieden und/oder Klimagerechtigkeit\nWenn irgendwie möglich und machbar\, sollten sie sich verpflichten\, ohne Flugreise zum Seminar zu kommen und stattdessen auf dem Landweg anzureisen.\n\nWir ermutigen ausdrücklich Teilnehmende aller Schichten\, Bildungshintergründe\, Geschlechter\, sexuellen Orientierungen\, Fähigkeiten und ethnischen Hintergründe\, sich zu bewerben. \nLogistik\, finanzielle Bedingungen und Nachhaltigkeit\nEinfaches Leben: Das Seminar findet in einem Seminarhaus mit einfachen Lebensverhältnissen statt. There is a momentum around this topic at the moment and any activism and public attention supporting this treaty can help to further the cause. Now in the era of technology\, young people spend more time online\, where many issues are projected in the web showing the need of raising the media literacy in young people. The world of media and social networks is becoming more and more visual\, so the need to distinguish between the good and bad examples of media provocations is pretty urgent too. \nBy this project we are willing to promote gender diversity and by transferring understanding on common fundamental values of our society to reach young people and to contribute to the prevention of violent radicalization based on gender. \nThe program of the training activity is organized in building up thematic modules to provide new information\, enhance knowledge and develop the skills of participants\, and enable participants to share in a safe and creative environment. The program also includes meetings with experts on visual arts as well as visiting several associations who will share their own practises and who are experts in the field of gender equality and will further contribute to the learning and development process. \nThe program of the training is organized in several modules like “raising gender literacy”\, “raising visual arts skills” or “visual stories become real” where the participants will be provided with new information to enhance their knowledge and develop their skills. We will work on creating a safe space where everyone feels comfortable sharing personal experiences and situations as well as feel free to unleash their creativity. This contributes massively to the climate crisis and to increasing social inequality. Among all the challenges\, this also offers an opportunity to reflect on lessons learned regarding mobility in international peace work during the pandemic.\n\n \n\nProject M.O.V.E. makes mobility a peace issue and considers the acute need to raise awareness and to promote critical reflection of current mobility choices in international volunteer projects and peace activities. With this work camp\, the biodiversity in the community garden at the place of the association “Verbindungskultur e.V.” close to Lake Constance is now to be specifically promoted. To this end\, we would like to enrich the existing permaculture garden with additional habitats for rare and/or specially adapted animal and plant species. \nType of Work: With our work\, we will focus on species protection and the construction of so-called “nature modules”\, i.e. small microhabitats that can increase and stabilize the biodiversity of a site\, in this case of the “home” our association. These nature modules include for example: dry stone walls\, stone piles\, stone pyramids\, dead wood piles\, wood cellars\, sandariums\, small water puddles\, wildflowers\, and many more. These increasingly rare habitats attract endangered species that can find a habitat here again. You don’t have to have knowledge on Wikipedia already. \nStudy Theme: There will be a big emphasis on studying in this workcamp. Relatives\, survivors\, and friends built a place of refuge amidst woodland where they could regain strength to continue their fight for a better world. Until today\, Heideruh is a recreation area for anti-fascists. Very often like-minded people from different generations meet up there. Since 2013 nine asylum seekers from North Sudan and Arabic countries are accommodated and supported in Heideruh. Now the focus ist to prepare for a time without contemporary witnesses. The camp includes a big study part. In approx. 50 % of the time will deal with the topics antifascism and rememberance. \nType of Work: (5 days): Maintenance\, repair\, and extension of the “barefoot walking path” and the “all generations” playground\, the focal points are on working with wood\, you learn different techniques and also how to use several machines. Everybody is welcome to try it out! \nStudy Theme: (7 Tage): Documentation of the work and camp\, preparation of a public commemoration ceremony\, meeting witnesses/ survivors and guests\, visiting the memorial of the former concentration camp Hamburg-Neuengamme. Make matters worse\, populist groups’ media depicts third-country nationals as exploiters of the welfare system while criminalizing civil society organizations in solidarity\, thus fueling social tensions into organized violence against people and institutions. An in-depth analysis shows that current propaganda roots in methodologies and tools developed under totalitarian regimes. Nazism and Fascism emphasized those features characterizing the public discourse during World War I and its aftermath such as nationalism\, hatred of the enemy and dehumanization: all of that contributed to lay the groundwork for WWII. \nIn this sense the project “CHAPTER. Challenging propaganda through remembrance” aims to cast a light on propaganda before and during WWII\, focusing on its role to enforce the concept of “enemy” – from national and ethnic groups to political opponents and social groups. Participants\, chosen among people who aren’t active citizens yet\, will act as Remembrance messengers in order to relate past events to current trends. The methods used during the training will follow the non-formal learning methodology: working in small groups\, discussions in plenary\, brainstorming\, presenting\, role play\, simulations\, etc. The team of trainers will consist of international experienced trainers\, facilitators and experts. \nProfile of the participants\nThe profile of the candidate should be the following: \n\nAge 18+\nAble to understand and express themselves in English;\nPolitically or/and socially active;\nHave and/or willing to gain experience in coordinating international activities (such as Workcamps\, Peace weeks or Remembrance Weeks) and ready to organize the Remembrance week in their country on the topic of the project;\nCommitted to attend for the full duration of the online training\nVolunteers\, activists and youth workers/coordinators who want to learn more about innovative communication methodologies and effective tools to protect refugees and national minorities from organised violence;\nWilling to learn more about the evolution of fascism\, effects and consequences of the ideology in the current situation;\nWilling to share experiences and stories from their local environment\, family\, friends and school (university) regarding to unfair attitude to refugees\, national minorities and other;\nWilling to be open-minded and eager to learn from the workshops in this activity and from their peers\, as well as maintain a positive attitude and a critical approach to the problematics and topics that will be reviewed;\nAre committed to assist or take the lead role in planning and implementing local initiatives in order to disseminate the learning outcomes.\n\nApplication procedure\nThe detailed call for participants can be found here. \nIf you are interested in participating\, apply by 15 March 2021 filling in the online application form. \nYou can reach us on the following e-mail: trainings@cvs-bg.org if you have further questions.
