Call for volunteers
08.03.2024 – 22.03.2024
Introduction:
About 12 volunteers will participate in this great attempt to maintain the typical natural environment/biodiversity of the Biosphere Reserve Wienerwald. We also want to show politicians and local communities that there are young people who do not shun hard work, who care for nature and who are willing to sacrifice their spare time to help conserve areas worthy of protection.
Type of Work:
Dry grasslands form a rare and endangered habitat in the Biosphere Reserve Wienerwald. We will cut grass, bushes and trees, and remove the biomass from the areas to suppress the beginning of forest growth. Our goal is to conserve and enhance biodiversity in unique and rare habitats.
We will also have time to get to know each other and learn about ecological protection.
Study Theme:
You will gather knowledge of the region on the Biosphere Reserve Wienerwald and its flora and fauna. Furthermore, you will gain hands-on experience in managing invasive plant species.
Accommodation:
You will be staying at the scout centre NÖ Pfadfinder und Pfadfinderinnen Landesverband, near Vienna, Austria. The facility is equipped with dormitories, bath rooms and a common kitchen. Volunteers are accommodated in the dormitories. Regular public transport is available.
Location:
The Wienerwald was designated as a Biosphere Reserve in 2005 by UNESCO. This standing protects the great variety of natural and cultural elements that make this region so unique and valuable. The Wienerwald BR covers an area of 105,645 hectares and extends across 51 communities in Lower Austria and seven municipal districts in Vienna. Some 815,000 people live in this region.
Requirements:
We will work every day for 5-6 hours with the breaks in between. We will have some free days in between and also free afternoons. The work will be physical and in steep terrain. Therefore, some basic fitness as well as solid ankle-high hiking boots are required. Before you sign up for this camp, PLEASE make sure that you are healthy enough to participate.
How to apply:
You can apply through our Workcamp Database or send us an email at placement.sciaustria@gmail.com
