SCI France is seeking volunteers to restore a 19th-century military fort through the European Solidarity Corps (ESC). ESC is a program of the European Union and is funded by the European Commission. The ESC offers young people (aged 18 to 30) the opportunity to participate in non-profit projects in their own country or abroad. The projects last from 2 to 12 months and are free of charge.
Description
The association Les Amis du Fort de Jouy is transforming this unique 19th-century military fort into a vibrant cultural and community space. Through restoration work, guided visits, and artistic events, the fort is gradually being reopened to the public and given a new life. As a volunteer, you will take part in this exciting adventure: preserving history, supporting cultural activities, and helping turn an old military site into a place of exchange, creativity, and discovery.
Activities involved
Volunteers will take part in…
- Restoration work (masonry, painting, maintenance)
- Renovating walls and cleaning historical areas
- Supporting the development of the site
- Working alongside local French volunteers
- Possibility to guide visitors and share the history of the fort
In addition, volunteers will enjoy intercultural exchanges, evening activities, workshops, and opportunities to explore the region.
Accommodation & Food
Volunteers will stay inside the site fort on provided beds and mattresses. Participants should bring a warm sleeping bag and their own towel and toiletries. The accommodation is very basic, with squat toilets.
Languages spoken during the camp
English and French.
Requirements
- Age 18-30
- Must be a resident of an EU country or Neighbouring Country
- This project is co-funded by the European Commission. Participants should have or should create an account on the European Youth Portal: https://youth.europa.eu/solidarity_en
- Sturdy clothing, gloves, safety shoes
- Prepare for simple living conditions and hard physical work.
