Hosting Organisation
This volunteer project is organised by SCI Catalunya, the Catalan branch of SCI, one of the 2 SCI branches in Spain. Based in Barcelona, their working area covers the Catalan countries (including Catalonia, Valencia, the Balearic Islands and Andorra). On the local level, their work consist in promoting peaceful social transformation of society in order to encourage sustainable human development and a culture of peace, through volunteer groups, involving our community and local networks.
Aim of the project
The SCI Catalunya’s partner organisation Neorurals Assoc has the mission to help all the people residing in cities but interested in rural lifestyles find solutions that can facilitate this transition. All their actions are based on a central idea: cultural development of the rural environment. For many years now, as the countryside has been losing population, many cultural activities that used to take place there have been disappearing due to migration to urban areas. Thus, there is a cultural degradation & a lot of our ancestral’s knowledge is disappearing due to no longer being useful in the urban lifestyle. Reversing this situation, promoting a permanent return to rural areas, requires work on the revival of certain cultural components. Only in this way we can create a vicious circle where culture brings people & people bring more culture.
Activities involved
The tasks will be mainly construction and forest clearing, working to open a path to access the social house that is being constructed. Other tasks such as wall painting, woodwork and arranging the wood will also be done during the volunteering experience. DIY skills will be needed for the construction of the dry toilet where recycled materials will be used including wood panels and hay that we will have to collect from the neighboring farms. The working tasks will always be easy and safe, always accompanied by a professional that will guide us. Supporting whatever the assotiation is working at the moment with the building and surroundings.
Accommodation & Food
The accommodation will be in tents in a camping area in the village of Àger. It is important that you bring your own sleeping bag. For cooking there is a wooden stove and many kitchen utensils. There is a dry toilet, a couple of showers and a small solar panel installed.

- age 18+
- motivation for manual work, so being healthy is advised, creativity
- open-minded and flexibility and willing to learn new things
- register on the international SCI database
- pay the participation fee
