Description

The project supports the creation of an after-school program dedicated to children and young people in Soshanguve, a lively community on the outskirts of Pretoria. The initiative aims to offer educational, creative, and sports activities, as well as to develop a youth center dedicated to training and empowerment. Volunteers work with the local team to design educational content, promote the value of volunteering, and create meaningful cultural exchange opportunities.

Activities involved

Volunteers participate in various community development activities, including:

  • Organizing non-formal activities for children (English lessons, arts and crafts, theater, sports, etc.);
  • Participating in the development of the Skills Development Youth Center, a platform designed to empower and educate;
  • Creating educational content and articles on topics such as volunteering and cultural diversity;
  • Community outreach and awareness initiatives;
  • Administrative support for reports and documentation;
  • Managing fundraising campaigns and resource mobilization.

Study Part

The project offers opportunities to learn more about the South African context, the social challenges facing the community, young people’s rights, and participatory methodologies for educational and empowerment activities.

Accommodation and Food

Volunteers will stay at a centrally located facility in Soshanguve, designed to provide a comfortable yet simple living environment. Participants are encouraged to bring their own sleeping bags for added convenience. The accommodation features: A basic bathroom with a shower and access to running water. Flushing toilets for hygiene and comfort. Electricity, although there may be occasional scheduled power cuts lasting up to two hours during the week (not daily).

Languages spoken during the camp

While English is widely spoken and serves as the main medium of communication, you’ll also hear other languages like Sotho, Zulu, Afrikaans, and Tshwana, among others.

Requirements

  • 20+
  • Open-mindedness, positive attitude, and willingness to share skills and culture;
  • Flexibility with regard to simple living conditions;
  • Interest in educational and artistic activities;
  • Contribution of EUR 300 per month, covering accommodation, food, and project costs;
  • Travel expenses and local transportation are not included.
