SCI Germany is hosting an anti-fascist volunteer camp with focuses on queer-feminist perspectives, war and peace, and methods to address displacement and isolation in Europe. This camp is a space for FLINTA* (Women, Lesbians, Intersex, Non-binary, Trans- and Agender).
This project is an international volunteer camp. To find out more, read all the requirements here: International Volunteer Camps or write to: placement@sciaustria.org / long-term@sciaustria.org
Description
Volunteers will work at Heideruh, a residential and holiday centre with a 100-year history of anti-fascism. In 1945, the Heideruh recreation and meeting place was built by people who had been politically persecuted by the Nazis, e.g. for children whose parents had been persecuted, lived underground, were imprisoned in concentration camps or were murdered. Relatives, survivors and friends invested a great deal of time and energy in establishing and maintaining this site. To this day, Heideruh serves primarily as a place of education and encounter for people who speak out against fascist ideology and work for peace and a more just society. Like-minded people from several generations often meet here.
The Volunteer Camp has been an integral part of the Heideruh year for 14 years. Volunteers will participate in work and study, as well as a visit to the memorial site of the former Neuengamme concentration camp in Hamburg.
Activities involved
Volunteers will complete both work and study aspects at the camp, including:
- Learning to use woodworking machines
- Maintaining the centre’s barefoot path
- Installing Mecki Hartung’s art sculpture ‘Welcome to Europe’
- Renovating the fire pit
- Learning world politics from a female perspective, with a focus on war and peacekeeping
- Reflection on diversity, including queerness and gender roles
- Learning the 100-year history of Heideruh
Accommodation & Food
Participants will stay directly in Heideruh in double or single rooms. Those who wish to can also sleep in tents. Tents and equipment can be provided. Meals are mainly provided by the Heideruh kitchen/canteen, with the group cooking for themselves and the staff at times. The kitchen is primarily vegetarian and vegan. Heideruh also has a small bar where you can buy various drinks, sweets and snacks at reasonable prices.
Language spoken during the camp
The camp will be in English. However, many staff members and guests in Heideruh speak German, so it is a great place to learn or improve your German. Other languages (Russian, Farsi, French, Turkish, Danish, Italian, Arabic, etc.) are also spoken within the team.
